This book is subtitled “How New Zealand can replace fossil liquid fuels with locally-made renewable energy by 2040”. Kevin Cudby is a Wellington based journalist with a background as an electronics engineer. In this book he explains why New Zealand should develop a strategy to replace fossil fuels, but he goes much further, explaining the current situation and various possible options.
The reader finds out if a return to the home made gas-producers of World War II fame is a possibility, or perhaps battery power is the answer, hydrogen fuel-cells feature, including a Freightliner powered by the fuel with a similar payload to a diesel powered model. Various bio-fuels, synthetic fuels, gas and advanced liquid fuel engines are considered. Eventually a strong argument materialises and Kevin explains, in very practical easy to understand terms, how New Zealand can lead the world in becoming fossil fuel free.
Understanding the possibilities is very useful, if not essential, to truck operators, just knowing what is going on and what alternatives are possible provides valuable long-term business knowledge. This type of information is usually put together in a difficult to read scientific textbook format, but Kevin has done a great job making it readable and easy to understand. Highly recommended.
